Navy Jobs Open for Surface Warfare Officers

Surface warfare officers work within the Navy and Coast Guard to manage water vessels like ships and submarines. Surface warfare managers may work specifically as combat teams on the ship or as ship drivers. As driver or fighters, surface warfare managers maintain the operations on the ship by managing the professionals and sailor’s that comprise the ship’s crew.

How to Become a Surface Warfare Officer for the US Navy

Beginning a career as a Navy surface warfare officer begins in several ways; candidates may attend training school at Newport, RI or enroll in a Naval academy. Courses take approximately 12-weeks and include physical, educational and simulation training. Subjects taught during training include Navy history, strategic sea control, ship control and combat systems.

Career Advice for Navy Retirees

Army, Navy and National Guard personnel do not have to retire to whatever entry-level civilian career they can find after leaving active duty. Experience earned through training and duty as a surface warfare officer will help candidates obtain various, high-paying civilian careers. Many surface warfare officers become oceanographers or information technologists on civilian research ships and submarines or even on commercial cruise ships.
